Hey Whats Up?
A lot of BBoys and BGirls have come to me complaining about lost hair and skin from doing headspins. They asked me what they need do to train headspins without ripping out their hair or getting a bald spot from it. CypherStyles has got the answers to keep you spinning in comfort and style. Here's a quick reference guide to headspin protection:
Types of Headspin Protection
Nothing
If you do headspins without any protection you will rip your hair out and rip your skin off. It will hurt and suck and distract you from the moves your working on. Eventually you'll build up a callus and your skin will get tougher, but you may develop a bald spot where you spin. You may be able to show off floor burns from a battle, but you will not impress anyone with your bald spot from headspins, bald spots are never in style. You will see some bboys do headspins without beanies but they are rare, and almost all BBoys use some form protection for headspins.
Caps
Caps are the lowest level of protection for headspins. The good news is they put a little fabric between you and the ground. The bad news is hats are usually made of thin fabric, they don't give you much padding and they won't stand up very well to abuse so it may get ripped up. The thin padding only provides a small level of protection and you may still lose hair and skin while you spin in suffering.
Caps also usually have a hard button at the top of the cap which is extremely painful to spin on. If you do try headspins in a hat, make sure you remove this cap first. It can be hard to do this without damaging the cap, but I've found using pliers to cut the cap where it connects to the top of the hat works very well.

Bandannas
Bandannas are slightly better than hats for headspins, but not by much. Here's the benefits: They are cheap, they are pretty low friction so you can spin easily on them, they're reasonably tough so they can stand up to some punishment and they put something between you and the floor, there's no hard button at the top to remove and they're highly portable.
Now the problems spinning in bandannas: they can come off pretty easily and they provide very little padding so you may still lose hair and skin spinning with them and experience distracting discomfort.

Head Spin Beanies
Most BBoys and BGirls wear headspin beanies, Triples or Headspin Helmets when they do headspins.
I do headspins too and the headspin beanies make them alot more comfortable than doing them without protection. Using no protection is begging to have you hair ripped out.

Head Spin Beanie "Triples"
The next level of protection for headspins are "Triples". If you do headspins alot or you'd like more padding when you do them, we carry triple thick headspin beanies that offer even better protection. Our "Triples" have 3 times the padding, the extra cushioning makes them softer, thicker and even more comfortable.

Headspin Helmet
The highest possible level of headspin protection is to get a headspin helmet. These give you MUCH more padding and are your best protection to prevent baldness and losing skin or hair. The pain of headspins is actually worst when your going slow and learning the move, so often beginners will get helmets to keep them comfortable while they get the technique down and then switch over to headspin beanies once they've mastered it.
Headspin helmets put several inches of dense foam between you and the floor and their low-friction surface makes it easy to spin and for extra padding you can wear a beanie in the helmet. They are bulky and look goofy for anything other than headspins, so usually bboys will only wear them when they are doing headspins in practice and battles, and leave the helmets off for floorwork or toprocks.
